I grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. I first came to the U.S. in 1994 for college, where I played baseball for Pepperdine University for four years (I was a catcher). I had big plans of playing professionally after college, but none of the 30 MLB teams shared my vision. I chose being a lawyer because the idea of trying cases resembled the competition in baseball—and I also figured there’s less chance of breaking my thumbs or aggravating my knees in a courtroom. Just before law school, I married my college sweetheart Marni (who swam at Pepperdine) and we celebrated our 26th anniversary in August. We’re an adoptive family with three daughters. Our middle daughter has cerebral palsy and is deaf (and non-verbal) so we’ve all learned sign language (ASL) as a family. (Unanticipated perk: Being able to sternly parent misbehaving children from 50 feet away without making a sound.)
