It is not just a coincidence that I am a trial lawyer who sues reckless trucking companies. I’m the oldest child of a transit union president and personal injury paralegal. But when I was a kid, I wanted to be a TV news anchor. It was fascinating to me that producers could investigate long, complicated stories, then stitch interviews together to give us bite-sized nuggets of news. I was the first in my family to go to college and I studied journalism. My dream was to write and to be on TV, telling stories about people’s defeats and victories. Instead, I do that in the courtroom.
For the first 19 years of my practice, I handled all kinds of personal injury cases in San Antonio; every type of case you can think of, from defamation claims to product liability cases. And I represented people with all types of damages: from sore necks that healed within a few months to catastrophic burn injuries and wrongful death cases. I speak Spanish. And this helps me tremendously to connect with clients. In Texas, nearly 30% of people speak Spanish at home.
In 2018, I partnered with Michael Cowen and Malorie Peacock to focus on suing trucking companies. We practice across the country. It has been the most fun! My favorite part is getting to the root of why a motor carrier makes a reckless decision. Telling that story. Then explaining my client’s heroic victories; how despite being wronged, they create work-arounds and remain hopeful when so many of us might just give up. I am a visual learner. So it is fun to invent visuals to help witnesses tell my client’s story. Right now, I’m re-thinking liability demonstrative exhibits. There has got to be something better than timelines, charts, and graphs.
Also, I’m a wife and a mom. And my favorite thing to do is to hang out with my husband Jon, an immigration lawyer, and our two daughters, wherever they want to be.
